of them citing boston pd. others citing federal sources. our own pete williams has taken a break from us to work the phones himself, and is now ready to speak us to in our washington bureau. pete, what do you know and what can we say? >> what we've been told by several source says there is no arrest. then it begins to break down from there, about whether -- let's start at the other end. what do they know? they believe they have video that shows what they were looking for. a person setting down a black nylon bag at the scene of one of the bombings and walking away. now as we go toward the other end of that, we have two conflicting source is on whether, you know, they see that person, they look at the face. do they know who it is or not? someone says yes, they are trying to find him. other sources say no, they are trying to figure out who it is. which is it, i don't know. i will say throughout this, from the beginning of this, this has been the hall mark of this story. that information that is pointing in totally different direction says coming from normally very dependable sources and you
followed as well. mike barnicle, it was pete williams who went against every instinct in this 24/7 news culture where people seem far more interested in getting it first than getting it right. it was pete williams who kept saying that information is incorrect. and he acted like a news reporter is supposed to act. he actually waited until he got the information and passed it on to everyone else. not an especially good day for journalism yesterday with news outlets messing up on an issue this important to the american people because they are just interested in speed instead of accuracy. >> yeah. i know. it wasn't a good day, joe, for this business. the pressures, of course, are enormous today. the pressures to get things first is e nermnormous, we know. it's now a first, let's get it first! look. we all make mistakes in this business, in every business. i probably lead the league in mistakes in terms of getting things into newspapers and what have you. but the larger issue here is what is going on in the back bay about six blocks from where we sit now out in front of the holy cross cathed
was intercepted and initially tested positive for the poison, ricen. pete williams will join us with the latest on this story. but first, while we may not know anything about who attacked the boston marathon yesterday or why, just over 24 hours after the explosion, there is a lot of new information tonight about the devices used in the attack. about to exekt from the investigati investigation. there were two explosive devices which exploded yesterday. no more along the route or city of boston. the devices appear to have consists of explosive and shrapnel put into pressure cookers. they have recovered black nylon bags at the sights of both devices. they are believed to have been used to transport the devices to the scene. what happens next is that every single fragment of bomb material recovered from those sites will be sent to an fbi land in quantico, virginia, where they can be analyzed by the fbi and atf experts and even checked for dna. investigators have launched a major push to seek information from the public, including tips on suspicious behavior and photo and video taken around the race
in boston. nbc's pete williams has been following the investigation in d.c. all day. pete, good evening. >> brian, good evening. still so many questions, but one has been answered, how many explosive devices were left at the scene. that answer is two. and officials describe them as crudely made but effectively used. and as of tonight, no suspects, no idea who did it or why. >> reporter: investigators have begun the process of recovering tiny pieces of the bombs to learn how they were made. they say it appears the devices were assembled inside pressure cooker pots similar to this one packed with bbs, ball bearings and nails to magnify the injury. as these homeland security bulletins note, pressure cookers have been used for decades in terror bombings. instructions for making them appear on the internet including just last month in an al qaeda magazine "inspire." investigators say the explosive in boston was most likely smokeless powder, gunpowder like this, available at sporting goods store, not something more powerful like dynamite. and they believe the bombs were carried to the scene i
had a lot to work with. let's keep all of this in perspective. pete williams is saying that video surveillance or the video evidence, that has been very productive as has the forensic evidence involving the bomb fragments which we have been showing you yesterday and today. the pressure cooker bombs that a lot was remarkably in tact. they were able to look at the ball bearings and shrapnel and look at that. the pieces of the pressure cooker enough to figure out the manufacturer. so they can track it down that way. the hope is what they have wanted all along is to see the image of whoever put down that black bag that contained -- black bags that contained the box. >> if i read this, what i find most fascinating, if you read it quite literally, somebody is about to be arrested for the bombings. the official says the suspect will be taken into custody. it sounds as if they know where this person is. it sounds as if, from what we have, this is not somebody who is necessarily on the run. would you agree? >> yeah. it is extremely unusual as i looked at that alert if you're anybody in law
. and for the very latest on the investigation, we're joined now by nbc news justice correspondent pete williams from washington. so, pete, the very latest on the pressure cooker scenario that you're hearing? >> right. as you say, used for decades in terms of building bombs, so that's not going to be an area of inquiry that will immediately lead them in a certain direction, because the instructions, unfortunately, for making these devices are all over internet. just last month, the al qaeda online magazine "inspire" repeated an article that showed how to build pressure cooker bombs. so they've been out there for a long time. the part, the components of this device appear not to be very fancy. in addition to that, there were shrapnel, ball bearings, bbs, from the sound of the doctors you heard at the beginning of your program, apparently nails as well. and then for the explosive basically gun powder, smokeless powder that's commonly available in sporting goods stores. so all these pieces are easily available. some kind of timer as well. then placed in black sacks and put in two different spots. so wha
of calls coming in. we're told by pete williams that the fbi is receiving calls of suspected matchups with the faces here. >> they are getting some names and now what they are trying to do is run those names through data is bas and s databases and there is no name to match the suspects. but they are operating those lines. they have task force teams obviously ready to run out and follow any leads as they come in. some names are being offered from the calls and e-mails that are coming in but as of now there is no certain match and they are, again, using all their computers and technology to try to, as the names come in, to try to find them and find out which tips are more credible than the others. >> i'm wondering, jonathan, if you were in that crowd and survived and you're watching right now, does the human memory work that way that you would recognize these two guys walking along dressed as they were? >> i don't know. looking over the videotapes of that crowd, people were coming, going, celebratory, people watching the race, looking out on to the marathoners finishing up looking for t
of bostonians. nbc's ann thompson and lester holt are live in boston and nbc justice correspondent pete williams is here with us in washington. you were in the cathedral, it was so moving to watch. tell me about that gathering and cardinal o'malley and the president and mayor menino and of course the governor. >> you know, andrea, it sort of ping-ponged from the memorial service to almost a pep rally for boston. i couldn't help but think as i watched mayor thomas menino stand, that he came to personify his city. he has been hospitalized for a respiratory infection and a broken leg. he stood today to deliver remarks and like his city, he has been wounded, but he is not down. and he told the world that boston is a city of courage, strength and compassion. and he said they will be back. and then when president obama spoke, i mean it really was almost like a pep rally. people were cheering, he got a couple of standing ovations. and especially when he said that they will come back, the world will come back and run the 118th boston marathon, which will happen next april, people just stood, i saw one m
done in the right way. >> nbc news correspondent pete williams has an update. what are you hearing regarding this video? >> video and still pictures is my understanding, tamron. >> yeah. >> we may see them today, we may not. this is kind of a back-and-forth thing. it seems, i guess, likely at this point that we will. and it should be clear if they do show these pictures today, these are the people they're most interested in talking to. you know, i don't think anyone at this point is saying the fbi has quote/unquote, found the bombers. they see the faces but they don't know who they are and if they show them publicly, they're going to be asking for public help to identify them so they can find them, talk to them and figure out what was going on there. it's always a difficult job to balance this, tamron, because on one hand the agented would prefer, i'm sure, to conduct this investigation on their own with a lot of tips that will turn out to be wrong but at the same time the longer they way, the more these people would get away or much worse try to do it again. there's competing pres
's not true. i was watching the other stupid nbc arm m bsz. >> no, no. pete williams who is the doj reporter over there. >> bill: that's the network. but their other arm was conflicting with them. cbs had it right. i'm not giving anybody else any credit. >> i jumped on the air as soon as i seen the conflicting reports which is 10 minutes after we had said we are being told by the.com property that the law enforcement officers say arrest. here is the situation. now there is conflicting reports now the >> bill: people i think people understand. >> people were very standing. >> you didn't get nasty emails did you. >> most part people said thank you for being transparent. >> it's cable news. part of the reason why people tune in they can be part of the process. you hold sort of the curtain open and let them see it. i was very honest about this is what we are being told. >> bill: this is not the first thing this has happened. all the time on the breaks information. you get erroneous information. >> it is strange. i'm puzzled i have to be honest that there are so many different law enforcement off
public. let's get to the latest with pete williams. i want to start with the two photos, the before and after of a bag next to a mailbox. how important are investigators thinking these could be? >> to be determined, i think. they are looking at this picture and similar pictures to see if that's how the bombs were placed. they're sort of contradictory photo evidence here about whether that's where they went because the after doesn't seem to show a lot of damage, but it's quite clear that the bombs themselves were not busted up into little tiny pieces and the pictures we're seeing show some large pictures of the cook er themselves. let me show you right here, you can see the brand name. inok. of one of the pressure cookers and on the pictures that show the batteries, this is a chinese made battery and these are also wires that were made in china. now, that kind of lead is very important because what they'll do now is to figure out who sells these pressure cooker, where would they have been bought. were they sold in the boston area? what about the wire? are there commonalities? where w
that pete williams from nbc news was insistent all the way through, that his law enforcement sources, which, of course, are impeccable were saying that there was not a suspect in custody. what was going on yesterday and what continues to go on today is that authorities have pored through the video and pictures have been coming in over the last three days trying to pinpoint exactly where those two packages were placed before they went off. now, authorities do acknowledge to nbc news that they have identified by sight a person who is seen placing either a backpack or a duffel bag on to the ground in the place where the second bomb went off in the moments leading up to that explosion. however, according to nbc news, that person has not been identified by name. they just see him on the tape and are working to identify him. he certainly has not been arrested or put into custody. police continue their work today to try to figure out exactly who that person is. last night, the fbi was planning to have one of their twice daily media briefings around 8:00 local time. that was canceled. and so we're
williams who is live in washington. pete, what are you hearing about the investigation to the bombings in boston? >> right. it's all about putting pieces of puzzles together. first of all, the devices themselves are here in the suburban washington in the fbi's crime lab where they will try to reinstruct them. they believe they were carried to the scene in black nylon duffel bags and say that because of the weight that each device probably weighed 20 pounds filled with gun powder and shrapnel and in pressure cookers. you can see the brand name of the pressure cookers in a couple of the pictures that we have obtained. the second part of it is the pictures themselves that they are asking people to send in and they are getting a huge amount, so far, three terra bytes of data that is thousands of hours of video and still pictures. they want more. this is from our affiliate in boston. it shows in the first picture what appears to be a trash bag next to the green thing is a trash container and looking at whether the bombs might have been place inside trash bags to look less conspicuous and a
